How to conduct a speed test

To test speeds, we recommend downloading the Ookla Speedtest app which is available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. It will give much more accurate results than a test conducted via a web browser. Using Ookla, you'll be able to choose your nearest B4RN test server:

  • Broadband for the Rural North - Allendale for customers in the North East
  • Broadband for the Rural North - Lancaster for customers in Lancashire, Cumbria and Cheshire
  • Broadband for the Rural North - Scole for customers in Norfolk

Many browser-based tests are there mainly to put advertising in front of you and you may end up testing to a poorly configured speed test server on the other side of the world.

If you have no alternative but to use a browser-based test, use fast.com (once the download test has completed, click the "Show more info" link to test the upload speed)

When conducting a speed test, make sure there is no other network activity taking place on your home network. To test the speed at the router, use a gigabit capable device connected directly to the router with a gigabit-capable network cable such as a CAT5e or CAT6 ethernet cable.
